Our true nature is love. But at some point in our life, usually in childhood, some external event causes us to separate from that true nature. That separation from love creates in us feelings of specialness or inadequacy, leading to loneliness and as a result, fear and guilt.
You think you feel guilty because you lied to a friend, ate too much ice cream or because you drank too much last night. But from the metaphysical standpoint you feel guilty because you’ve chosen to think with fear over love.
Guilt is the affect of choosing to identify with the voice of fear (the ego) rather than your true inner voice of love. You experience this guilt because you’ve turned your back on your loving truth.
You can start releasing this feeling.

Guilt has been linked to needless emotional suffering and self-loathing. And if this is not enough, this internal agonizing can lead to such anxiety or shame-based problems as substance abuse, sexual disorders, and an enormous variety of other self-sabotaging behaviors. We can feel guilty about feeling good! How insane does that sound?
So, unless guilt feelings are actually necessary for you to take appropriate responsibility for a significant misdeed - such feelings don’t really serve you or anyone.

You didn’t know what you know now. It’s unkind, or even cruel, to blame yourself for acting in a way that you would definitely have avoided - had you more awareness than, realistically, could have been expected of you at the time. Let it go.
