Yesterday, Linkin Park released the first track taken from the upcoming record 'One More Light'. The internet was mostly filled with negative comments towards the softer direction Linkin Park have taken for this track. Then again, when is the overall feedback not negative when it's about a band as big as Linkin Park?

Mike Shinoda recently spoke out about the direction of the new record in numerous interviews but one that stuck with us is his statement to Billboard.
Mike Shinoda explained that with every Linkin Park record, the band tries to challenge themselves to be better, explore new avenues and blending more styles into one.
With every Linkin Park era, it seems the band has gotten a tad softer, while remaining quite heavy on some tracks throughout the years.

Latest record 'The Hunting Party' for example: Overall a 'soft' record for Linkin Park standards, while 'Keys To The Kingdom' is arguably one of the heavier tracks the band released in their career.

Mike Shinoda continues to explain why the band decided to release 'Heavy' as lead single for the upcoming record. 'Heavy' contains the 'core sound' of the record. It's a good example of how the album will sound.
His exact words were:
“This wasn’t a scenario where the whole album sounds one way and the single sounds different. This is how the album sounds. So we wanted to go out with a song like that, where everybody can get a sense of the direction of this body of work.”

Shinoda also shed some light on the lyrical content for the new track 'Heavy' and how it came to be. Shinoda said he, Brad Delson and Chester Bennington were working with songwriters Justin Tranter and Julia Michaels in the studio. Upon arrival, Bennington was asked how he was doing.

“Oh, I’m fine” was his response“We were hanging out for a minutes and he was like, ‘You know what? I have to be honest. I’m NOT fine. I’m NOT OKAY. Too much stuff is just happening to me. I just feel underwater.’ It was like that saying ‘when it rains it pours;’ It’s that kind of feeling that stuff is piling up one on top of the other and it creates this feeling of just being overwhelmed, like, ‘Things feel so heavy to me…'”

Stream the new track 'Heavy' below and prepare yourself for the new album 'One More Light', which will release on May 19th!
