The history of the word curry

In their search for pepper and other spices, the Portuguese conquered Indian Goa in 1498. They soon caught the words that sounded like khari or caril referring to a kind of sauce that could be spicy as well as not spicy. When the Spaniards took over the power, the word was corrupted into the current curry. But it would take a long time before the curry as we know it now also became known in Europe.

Strangely enough, the invention of curry .is assigned to the English who took over power after the Spaniards. Even though curry, or what we now call curry, had been a traditional Indian dish for centuries, the English are said to have invented it. This is probably because English Hannah Glasse was the first to include curry in her cookbook in 1747.
